Websters dictionary or Webster dictionary is The most respected American dictionary. It features over 40,000 usage examples - more than ever before - which clarify confused or disputed terms. Additionally, thousands of phrases and idioms help distinguish vocabulary for language learners. This is the most comprehensive Merriam Webster's collegiate dictionary to date. It always amazes me that we can purchase so much information so inexpensively. This is a terrific resource -- it's time to update your dictionary!!.  THE NEWBURY HOUSE DICTIONARY  has lots of pictures, but I wish it had more--pictures are extremely important for people who are learning English. Definitions are composed in an easy-to-understand, limited vocabulary, with the sample sentences designed to show how the words and expressions are actually used.
If you want a book that takes you on a stroll through the history of ideas, starting with the earliest quotations, and moving through to the most recent, then this is a good book for you, perhaps the best. Invaluable, authoritative, probably the "best".
The new third edition of the Longman Dictionary Of American English is out and includes a thesaurus and profiles 52,000 words and phrases, including all words on the Academic Wordlist, featuring not just definitions but examples. The thesaurus boxes explain synonyms and antonyms: add tips on grammar and key word highlights and you have a lasting library reference.
 
The Concise Oxford English Dictionary is the most popular dictionary of its kind around the world and is noted for its clear, concise definitions as well as its comprehensive and authoritative coverage of the vocabulary of the English-speaking world. The best concise dictionary ever in my life. Easy to understand and Clear definitions the American Heritage Dictionary, however, offers the words' definitions, etymologies, and various pronunciations and spellings. In addition, this dictionary is also encyclopedic, succinctly explaining about certain people, places, events, et cetera.
It's impressively comprehensive for a collegiate dictionary, with more than 215,000 definitions. Each item includes a pithy wealth of information, with first usage date, etymology, and pronunciation, and clear, precise definitions. In addition, there are often usage notes, synonym cross-references, illustrative quotations, variant spellings and pronunciations, regional labels, and information on capitalization, function, and inflections.
"Master the Subtleties of Language" It groups synonyms together and then explains the subtle differences between them (e.g., "infer, deduce, conclude, judge, gather" are followed by definitions of each word explaining the subtle differences in their meanings -- and example of their usage in a sentence) If ever you spent five bucks on a writing reference book, this is the book to have.


This is incontrovertibly the most comprehensive dictionary available. If you contemplate buying a dictionary, then make sure you acquire this one. It is extraordinarily well structured and the definitions are lucid. I still have not encountered an unfamiliar word that was not found in The Collins English Dictionary.
