Change In TOEFL
New TOEFL from September 2005
The Internet-based TOEFL Test
The TOEFL
Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT) tests all four language skills
that are important for effective communication: speaking,
listening, reading, and writing. The test helps students
demonstrate that they have the English skills needed for success.
What Is the Benefit
of An Internet-based Test?
TOEFL iBT
emphasizes integrated skills and provides better information to
institutions about students' ability to communicate in an academic
setting and their readiness for academic coursework. With
Internet-based testing, ETS can capture speech and score responses
in a standardized manner.
Online registration
and online score reporting make it easier for students to register
for TOEFL iBT and receive their test scores.
There
will be four sections: Reading, Listening,
Writing, and Speaking. Examinees will be allowed to
take notes and use the notes to answer test questions.
The
Computer-Based TOEFL will be discontinued when the Next Generation
TOEFL is introduced. Although a Paper-Based TOEFL will still be
offered at test centers where an Internet-Based test is not
practical, the Next Generation version of the Paper-Based TOEFL
will include all four sections-Reading, Listening, Writing,
and Speaking.
When Will TOEFL iBT Be Available?
The official new
TOEFL will be offered starting September 2005 at secure ETS test
centers worldwide. ETS is introducing the new test in phases.

ETS will begin
offering full-length practice versions of the test along with
related learning tools on their website,
www.toefl.org
. The practice test scores
will be reported only to the test taker.
The Education
Testing Board (ETB) has overhauled the standard 40-year old Test
in response to complaints that despite high TOEFL scores, many
foreign students were unable to communicate effectively once they
join American schools and universities.
When the new version
is introduced, test takers and English language instructors will
see a whole new approach to TOEFL. It's more than just a test.
Test takers will get diagnostic information on their strengths and
weaknesses and guidance on improving their scores. The Test will
offer learning tools to help people improve English language
proficiency.
This next generation
TOEFL test is to evaluate the English speaking proficiency of
students whose native language is not English and who intend to
pursue studies in a college or university where English is spoken.
Those taking the
test have to reply orally to questions provided in oral and
written format. These oral answers are recorded on tape. Hence,
writing is not required. The test fee is $ 140.
