USA Education System
Eligibility
A candidate who has successfully completed four years of Bachelors
Programme or Under Graduate Study is eligible to apply for the
Master's Degree in USA. The traditional three year degree (BA,
B.Sc, B.com) holders from India must complete an additional year
of degree programme for eligibility. A one-year university
affiliated program will make up for the fourth year of a U.S.
Undergraduate degree. One-year education of a two year degree
course (like M.Tech, MA etc) may not be accepted by most schools.
The full course has to be completed for qualification, unless
there is a recognized university exam at the end of one year.
Additional courses which should be taken by them is decided by the
student advisors appointed for them. There are even registered
agencies who will evaluate the subjects studied in India with the
courses equivalent in America and issue a certificate.
Most schools require qualifications comparable to a U.S.
Bachelor’s (Honours) degree (Four Year Degree Program). That means
a minimum of 16 years of formal education. In the Indian context,
it implies qualifying in a professional four-year degree like
engineering or other such courses.
No standardized policy exists regarding the acceptance of such
programs. Some universities may accept the three-year Indian
Graduation Degree for a few programs. Confirmation can only be
obtained by either writing directly or formally applying to the
universities concerned.
Independent certificate courses offered by private institutions
like Aptech, NIIT, etc. may or may not be accepted based on each
individual university’s evaluation.
Research (Doctoral Degree) - The highest degree awarded in
research-oriented academic disciplines, usually requiring 3 to 6
years of full time study besides the Bachelor's degree as
preparation for University level teaching and research. Indian
students with a Master Degree can apply for P.H.D.
Professional programs like the CA, ICWA, part time diplomas from a
university such as those in management, communication may or may
not be accepted. Though many universities, especially Business
Schools, have started recognizing the Indian CA.

The US acceptance of 15 years of formal education follows a
European decision to harmonise the degree structure under the to
award a bachelor’s degree in three years rather than four that’s
been the norm in US.
The new structure takes its name from the Bologna Declaration of
1999, when 29 countries resolved to create a European High Area by
2010. The Bologna Process has since grown to include 45 countries,
virtually forcing the US to acknowledge the India, too. Becomes a
beneficiary of this change.
Earlier, the only exceptions to the 16-year norm were very bright
students who would be given a waiver by grad schools to join extra
credits. Engineering degree holders faced no problems since theirs
was a four-year degree.
There was relief among aspiring US-geors. “Now, I can concentrate
on my graduation as I do not have to spend an extra year
graduation, which would ultimately be no help, “ said Jaita Das,
an English literature student of Delhi’s Kirori Mal College, who
Harvard.
“Earlier, only students with outstanding academic record used to
get a year waived. This would be an opportunity for all Indian
their dreams immediately after they pass out of college and not

Anecdotal evidence also suggest that US institutions are now
beginning to recognize Indian degrees as equivalent to America

Dharwar, recently had her degrees evaluated by the Wo Service
(WES). Her BA, and MA were certified equivalent to similar US
degrees, while her MPhil was considered equivalent to American
advanced graduate studies.
A recent study by the Council of Graduates Schools (CGS) says:
Evaluating applications to US graduate schools from international
bachelors degrees earned in three years has become a less
controversial issue on US campuses.” ( Source: The Times of India
